How to Brew Cold

The Cold Method

Subzero is built for cold extraction. Here's how to do it right at home. two methods, two timeframes, both crushed by anyone with patience and a fridge.

Method 1. Mason Jar

Easy · Hands-Off
Coarse · Sea Salt
1:5
Ratio
Cold
Filtered Water
16–18 hrs
Steep Time
1.Combine 100g coarse-ground coffee with 500g cold filtered water in a quart-size mason jar. Stir to fully saturate the grounds.
2.Seal the jar and refrigerate for 16–18 hours. Don't shortcut the time. cold extraction is slow on purpose.
3.Pour through a fine mesh strainer + paper filter (or a coffee sock) into a clean container. Slow and gentle. don't press.
4.What you have is concentrate. Dilute 1:1 with water or milk before drinking. Serve over ice.

Method 2. French Press

Faster · Easier Cleanup
Coarse
1:5
Ratio
Cold
Filtered Water
12–14 hrs
Steep Time
1.Add coarse-ground coffee directly to a French press. Pour cold filtered water at a 1:5 ratio (coffee to water). Stir.
2.Place the lid on with the plunger pulled up. Refrigerate for 12–14 hours. The shorter steep works because of the press's volume and contact.
3.Press the plunger slowly. Pour through a paper filter for clarity. French press metal mesh alone leaves silt.
4.Concentrate. Dilute 1:1 with water or milk. Cleanup = dump grounds, rinse press. Done.
Pro Tips
  • Use filtered or spring water. chlorine destroys cold brew flavor faster than anything else.
  • Concentrate keeps 7–10 days sealed in the fridge. Best within the first week.
  • For a sweeter cup, add 1 tbsp simple syrup after dilution. The cold doesn't pull sugars from solids well.
  • For a protein cold brew, dilute with oat or whole milk instead of water. heavy on the body, smooth on the finish.

First bag where the chocolate doesn't fall apart.

I cold brew daily. This is the first bag I've found where the chocolate doesn't fall apart over ice. Smooth, never sour, holds up perfectly with oat milk.

vs. The Aisle

Why Bottled Cold Brew Costs More

Most cold brew you can buy already-made was bottled months ago, often loaded with sweeteners and preservatives. Brewing at home from real beans changes the math, and the cup.

"Coffee is the first thing most of us put in our bodies every morning. I wanted to know what was actually in mine, and what I learned about mass-market coffee was rough. Pesticides, mold, contaminants, mystery sourcing. So we built the opposite. USDA Organic, traceable to the farm, small-batch roasted. No shortcuts. No additives. No BS."

Questions

The FAQ

Can I brew this hot?

You can, but Subzero is blended for cold extraction. the body and acidity are dialed for slow cold steeping. If you want hot brew, try Ascend instead. Same brand standard, optimized for hot methods.

How long does the concentrate last?

7–10 days sealed in the fridge. Best within the first week. After that the flavor flattens. still drinkable, just less vibrant.

What's the caffeine content?

Cold brew concentrate is roughly 2x the caffeine of regular drip per ounce. but you dilute 1:1 before drinking, so a finished cup ends up similar to a strong drip cup. Adjust dilution to taste.

Whole bean or pre-ground?

Whole bean is best. cold brew uses coarse grind, and grinding fresh preserves flavor. If you don't have a grinder, choose pre-ground and we'll grind it coarse for you the day your order ships.
